Duke Forest is a forest managed by Duke University for research, teaching, and recreation. It is an outdoor laboratory for Duke.
Duke Forest has limited public access and if you are into hiking, this is the place you want to head for. The Duke Forest trails wind through some very scenic areas with woods streams, flowers, and wildlife.
The trails are what you would probably consider semi-challenging. They do take you up to some beautiful lookouts and back down to follow the Eno River for awhile.
The trails are not that well marked so make sure you are aware of how long you are out there so that you will not overtax yourself. There are a plethora of roads and trails so it would be best go ahead and buy the maps for Duke Forest.
There is one trail, the Al Buehler Cross Country Trail, that goes around the perimeter of Washington Duke Golf Course. This is actually not technically in Duke Forest but, the trail is maintained by the Office of Duke Forest and is worth checking out. Al Buehler Trail Map
Besides hiking there is biking, fishing and horseback riding. There are no stables in the Forest itself but you can rent horses in some near by locations.
Duke Forest is a research facility and significant amount of research is ongoing. Luckily we do get to use if we are respectful of its regulations.
Duke Forest is a very interesting and enjoyable place to go for the outdoors types.
Other Raleigh Recreational venues we like are William Umstead State Park, the JC Raulston Arboretum and Falls Lake.

Driving Directions: From US 15-501 Bypass, go 1.3 miles northwest on NC 751. Pull off at the second gravel area on the right after Constitution Dr. This is Duke Forest Gate "C". At the trailhead is a wooden box with maps and a description of the Shepherd Nature Trail.
