Description, Map, Review & Recommendations

Mordecai Historic Park Mordecai Park Mordecai

Mordecai Historic Park is a cluster of historic buildings set up in a park-like enclave near downtown Raleigh.

The Mordecai House is the original building on the site. It was once the "main house" of Wake County's largest plantation with more than 5,000 acres. The Mordecai house is the oldest building in Raleigh on its original foundation.

Historic buildings from other locations have been moved to the park. One of the buildings is the building in which President Andrew Johnson was born in 1808. It was a small tavern kitchen in downtown Raleigh in which his mother worked. The building was moved from about a mile away to the Historic Park.

Another building is the Allen Kitchen. The building is a separate structure as kitchens on plantations often were. In the summer there are reenactments of life in the 1842 kitchen and they use antique kitchen tools and techniques to prepare meals.

St. Mark's Chapel, is on the park grounds. It was originally built on a plantation by slave carpenters in 1847. There is also a lawyer's office building and the Ellen Mordecai Garden.

The Mordecai Historic Park is on the National Historic Register of Historic Places and they have hourly tours Tuesdays thorough Sunday. If you like period architecture and history, Mordecai park is definitely worth a stop.

Other Raleigh Recreational venues we like are William Umstead State Park, the Sarah P. Duke Gardens and Falls Lake.
