The Raleigh Times Bar is a great bar/restaurant or restaurant/bar - depending on when you get there.
It is set in a refurbished old building in downtown Raleigh that is the original space of the local newspaper. The theme is vintage, old school, big city bar that happens to be in a newspaper joint. It is pretty cool.
It has photos from the old Raleigh Times paper plus the pint glass that President Obama drank out of during his campaign.
By day, like many downtown Raleigh restaurants, The Raleigh Times draws a strong lunch crowd. By night it becomes it's alter ego - a place jam-packed with those seeking the extensive, eclectic beer selection and a cool place to hang out with friends.
As for the food - for those who like nachos, get the Carolina pulled pork nachos with the home-made potato chips. Highly recommended!!
When you have visitors new to the South you have to get them some fried pickles. They are phenomenal even if you don't like pickles.
If you eat that wonderful hot mess called cheesy fries - eat it here! The Raleigh Times Bar has the best cheesy fries in Raleigh. The fries are crispy on the outside, soft in the middle. Then they top them with cheese, fresh chives, wonderful fresh jalapenos, and crispy bacon.
When you don't want a full assault on your arteries try the blackened romaine salad. The romaine is wilted on the grill and topped with Cajun seasoned chicken and a great avocado-jalapeno dressing. Another great salad is the Country French salad. The beets, walnuts, gorgonzola and pear all come together to just sing out "healthy."
The Raleigh Times is one of those downtown restaurants where everyone can find something on the menu that will be good.
The Raleigh Times Bar can get a little loud in the evening because it is so packed full of people. But, people keep coming for a reason - it is a fun bar/and or restaurant.

Driving Directions: The Raleigh Times Bar is located at 14 E. Hargett Street in Raleigh. From I-40/440 and Wade Ave. Turn east on Wade; merge onto Capital Blvd/Downtown Blvd; Continue onto N Dawson; Turn left at W Morgan St; Turn right at Fayetteville St.; Take the 1st left onto E Hargett St. The Raleigh Times Bar will be on the right.
